DEA scam hitting Effingham County

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office is warning people about a phone call scam where a called claims to be a DEA Agent, accusing the victim of being involved in some kind of prescription medication fraud.

The scammer told the victim the DEA has been monitoring her phone calls, text messages and emails. She was then told she needed to pay the fine to avoid being arrested.

"I guess when you're not in the know on it, and you get a call from somebody that's portraying a law enforcement officer or federal agent, whatever it may be, you know you automatically think the worst," said Effingham County Sheriff's Detective Bobby McQuaig.

Deputies want to remind people that no law enforcement agency will call and ask for money in order for you to avoid being arrested.
