A former Savannah police officer wanted for rape is now in police custody. Effingham County sheriff's deputies say Albert Jeffcoat was arrested around 9:30am this morning, after he was seen walking out of a the First Baptist Church in Springfield.

Sheriff's deputies say the former Savannah police corporal had handcuffed a woman against her will around noon on Monday, and drove her around in a truck.

When she refused to obey his instructions, they say he used pepper spray and pointed a loaded gun at her, forcing the woman to perform sexual acts.

Deputies say, several hours later the woman managed to escape when they drove to Guyton. She ran to the Guyton City Hall and was able to get help.

Now Jeffcoat is behind bars facing several felony charges. Deputies say he was arrested without incident and is now speaking with his attorney.

WTOC will have the latest tonight starting on THE News at 5.
