Washington lawmakers passed a bill that could put money back in college students' pockets, but the plan has been met with opposition.

The House passed a new bill that simplifies the process of figuring out who's eligible to receive education tax credits.

The new bill would give students a tax credit – up to $2,500 a year – to help pay tuition and other school related expenses. It would also replace overlapping deductions and credits that cover more, but are difficult to figure out.

Some education officials oppose the bill because the bill would exclude a number of graduate and older returning students would lose their tax breaks. The White House administration opposes making the bill permanent because it would add $ 97 billion to the budget deficit over the next 10 years.

The previous law was set to expire at the end of 2017, but the new law makes the tax credit permanent.
