Fort Howard Rd in Effingham Co. open following gas leak

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Fort Howard Road in Effingham County is now back open after a gas leak closed the road.

Rincon Police, Rincon Fire and Emergency Management officials said Fort Howard Road was closed around 1 p.m. due to a gas leak in the vicinity of Willopeg. 

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office also assisting.

Officials said Warren Undergound Services was installing a cable line on Fort Howard Road outside of the Lost Plantation neighborhood when they struck a gas line while digging.

Employees said they are a subcontractor for Windstream. They say the gas line was not marked and they had no idea a line was there.

Area residents within a half mile surrounding the area were evacuated for precaution. The first six houses in Lost Plantation were evacuated along with the I'll Be Your Best Friend Academy. A total of 126 students and 16 teachers were moved to Savannah Christian Church. 

So far, no injuries have been reported. Crews with Utility Locating Services (811) were waiting for the line to be fixed so they can investigate whether the line was marked or not.
