Beaufort Water Festival ready for bed races

When you think of the Beaufort Water Festival one thing that might not come to mind is beds but as always the bed races will kick off on July 25.

It is considered to be one of the biggest traditions upheld during the festival's 59 year history.

The bed races are exactly what you would think, people racing on the street in beds down Harrington Street.

The race is a quarter mile long and spectators splash the participants in their elaborate costumes.

The defending champions are "The Werewolves", who hope to take home first prize again this year.

The Cross Fit of Beaufort put together a team this year and team member Kylie Gratton says, "We do a lot of lifting with weights. We pick each other up and put each other down. We have not done any practicing, we are just going to wing it. I think we got it in the bag this year, I think we are going to bring home the gold."

There are 14 teams of five competing in this year's race.

The race will officially start at 5:00 p.m. tune into WTOC to see how it turns out.
