The Decatur Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division were called to the scene to investigate. The shootings were determined to be the result of an attempted murder and suicide.

According to officials, the female victim was flown to Huntsville Hospital under critical condition, and the male was transported by ambulance to the Decatur Morgan hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man was pronounced dead on arrival.

The man's name was James Jones, but he went by Jim. He was 84 years old.

The woman is still in the hospital, but she is expected to make a full recovery, according to Decatur police.

One neighbor said he saw it happen. He said a woman covered in blood ran from her house to her next door neighbor's and began screaming for help. He heard her call and ran to see the commotion. When he got there, her husband was beside her. That was when she yelled, "He shot me, he shot me."
