Beaufort Water Festival Grand Parade draws thousands

The Beaufort Water Festival rolled into the second weekend with the grand parade down Bay Street.

One of the best writers of his generation, Pat Conroy, was Grand Marshal of the parade on Saturday. About 40 units made their way down historic Bay Street, founded in 1711: South Carolina's second oldest city, after Charleston.

Just across the park from the parade were the dragon boat races, which brought 29 teams and several thousand people to downtown Beaufort while raising almost $50,000 to fight cancer. Past Commodore, Richard Norris says it was the best waterfest ever.

"All the stuff; the fun; the flash was bigger and better than it ever has been; it was the best water festival ever. I say that every time, because if we don't make it better each time, then we are going backwards," said Richard Norris, Past Commodore.

The Commodore's Ball is Saturday night, featuring this year's commodore, Brandy Gray.
