MCCALLA, AL (WBRC) -

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating a church arson in McCalla.

The sheriff's office responded to a burglary alarm at Bellview Baptist Church located in the 6600 Block of Eastern Valley Road around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

While in route to the call, the sheriff's office received a call that a white male was pouring gas on the front of the church and had set it on fire. Windows at the church were busted out and the suspect poured gasoline on a bench inside the church.

Deputies say the suspect fled in a Chevrolet Impala while a witness tried to extinguish the fire.

Church members believe the witness scared off the suspect before he was able to gain full access to the church, preventing him from setting the sanctuary on fire. The church was still able to have their church service on Sunday.

The McAdory Fire Department responded to the scene to make sure the fire was out. The investigation is ongoing.

On Wednesday, authorities offered a $10,000 reward in the case for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 205-324-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
