JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County Commissioner Sandra Little Brown is calling for an end to a voting challenge to her narrow win over former commissioner Shelia Smoot.

Brown beat Smoot by 26 votes but one voter alleges voting irregularities.

Commissioner Brown held a news conference on Monday morning at Kelly Ingram Park with her attorney, well-known Montgomery lawyer Joe Espy.

Brown and Espy called the vote challenge baseless and meritless. They want know details of any allegations of voting irregularities or wrongdoing.

Birmingham voter Ervin P. Hill filed the vote challenge.

Barry Ragsdale, attorney for the Jefferson County Democratic party says Hill has until 5 p.m. Wednesday to produce $7,500 cash for the party to launch an investigation.

If the money comes in, an official vote challenge is expected to be held this week.

If the decision is appealed, it will go to the full Democratic party executive committee.

Brown warns if her nomination is taken away from her, she believes it will lead to a voter backlash against the Democratic party in November.
