Work optional for downtown bike taxis because of heat

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Monday is one of the hottest days of the year, and it can be extremely dangerous for people who work outside for hours in this heat.

On a normal day, people would see bike taxis all over the place, but on days like Monday, at least one of the companies makes coming to work optional.

Running around in the Ellis Square Fountain is one way to stay cool in the heat, but not everyone has that option.

A heat index of 110 can be extremely dangerous for people who work outside, like the drivers for the Royal Bike Taxi. On average, they spend hours in the heat pulling hundreds of pounds on a bike.

On days when the heat reaches extreme temperatures, General Manager Bob Hunt said he doesn't require his drivers to come to work.

"It's voluntary at this point because with a heat index of 110, it's brutal," said Hunt. "Some do, some don't want to do it. The ones that do ride, we encourage them to drink a lot of water, and I tell them not bottles of water, but jugs of water, and a lot of sunscreen."
