FORT STEWART (WTOC) -

Fort Stewart is remembering the late Thomas D. Houston, Jr. in a ceremony on Monday.

The installation renamed its Engineer Qualifications Area in his honor. He was a lifelong community resident and selfless servant who spent 53 years of his life dedicated to the U.S. Army and Team Stewart as a soldier, a Dept. of the Army civilian, a state cooperator and a local historian.

Houston's son said he was proud to see a memorial unveiled paying tribute to his father.

"Engineer soldiers will go to that range and see that monument, and even though they won't get a chance to meet him, to sit there and ask themselves the question ‘who was this man and why was he so important that the Army and Fort Stewart has elected to nominate a range for him?' and it's my hope that heritage and legacy is passed on to all the engineering soldiers that go to that range to train," said Thomas Houston.

Houston, Jr. was the catalyst for much of the infrastructure that supports soldiers, their families and the local community here today.
