Tips to save money on back-to-school shopping

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It's time for some back-to-school shopping. Notebooks, backpacks, new clothes -- it can all add up!

"It gets expensive quickly," says Consumer Savings expert, Shannon Hanrahan from Promotionalcodes.com.

Hanrahan says there are simple ways parents can save on back to school shopping. She recommends parents first shop in an unlikely spot -- home.

"Pencils, calculators, things that could have been shoved in the back all summer long, search for those,"Hanrahan said.

And search those closets for clothes that your children can still wear.

Also, when it comes to buying new items, don't go for trendy clothes. Hanrahan cautions, your children might change their minds once they see what their friends are wearing.

And don't buy fall and winter clothes just yet. It will be some time before the weather turns cooler so purchase summer items that are on sale.

"All the stores are bringing out their fall collections and summer items are very discounted," Hanrahan said.

To make sure you get the biggest discount, search for coupons or have them come to you. Sign up for coupon alerts. Promotionalcodes.com will send you the best savings through email.

Also, shop around for the best deals. The local dollar store may not have the best prices.

And you can't beat free. Think of having a mom swap where you trade and barter with other parents.

"Share what you're not using with what they're not using," Hanrahan said.

Those school supply lists seem to get longer every year. Hanrahan suggests you email your child's teacher to see which items your student absolutely has to have.
