Woman dies after driving into water in Gwinnett County

A woman died after driving her SUV into a small body of water in Gwinnett County Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Davinci Court and Peachtree Corners Circle.

Witnesses called 911 and reported seeing the accident.

The vehicle was completely submerged in 15 to 20 feet of water and crews made attempts to gain access but were unsuccessful.

After the SUV was pulled from the water, they found Laura Jones Tavel, 53, of Duluth inside.

Her cause of death was drowning.

The circumstances surrounding what led her to leave the roadway and drive into the pond is still under investigation.

Police said there didn't appear to be any skid marks indicating an attempt to stop.

It could be 10 to 12 weeks before blood alcohol and toxicology tests are completed. There was no evidence of any catastrophic natural disease and no trauma to her body.
