US Hwy 80 back open after a gas leak

BRYAN CO., GA (WTOC) -

U.S. Hwy 80 is back open in both directions after a natural gas leak.

It was closed from 11 a.m. until about 3 p.n.

Officials said all lanes on U.S. 80 from Sandhill Road heading into Bryan County were closed due to the leak.

Investigators said a utility company hit a service line that was going to an old building, that they weren't aware of.

811 had come out prior to mark the main line, but they did not locate the service line that was hit. Claxton Gas is trying to resolve the problem, but at this time natural gas has been shut down from Effignham County to Claxton.

Business owners and residents in the area said the smell of gas was overwhelming.

Claxton Gas plans on going to each home and business with natural to make sure their blue light is working correctly.
