SCMPD recruits to honor fallen deputy at 'Run to Remember'

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Thursday, July 31, members of the SCMPD Patrol School Class 274 and Class 275 will honor a fallen Bulloch County Sheriff's deputy during a "Run to Remember" in downtown Savannah.

On May 19, 2001 Sgt. Wilbur Lewis Berry was shot and killed while he and two deputies were struggling with a burglary suspect. Berry served on the department 20 years.

Runners will gather at 9:00 a.m. at the south end of Forsyth Park at Bull St. and Park Avenue.

The run will begin at 10:00 a.m. and proceed north on Drayton Street to Oglethorpe Avenue, ending at the Police Officer Memorial next to SCMPD Headquarters.

A brief memorial service will take place with the Berry's family, including his wife, daughter, and his 11-year-old granddaughter who never met her grandfather.

Members of the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office will also be participating in the run and attending the service.

Every Metro Police recruiting class honors a law enforcement officer from the Savannah and Chatham County area who was killed in the line of duty.
