POINT PLACE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A meetingwas held Wednesday with Toledo and Washington Township police present to helpresidents figure out how they can combat recent crime. Many residents at themeeting say they were there because they've been a victim of crime, or knowsomeone who has.

"What canwe do better? What can we do to help our neighbors? How can we help thecommunity?" asked Kellie Schlachter, owner of DK Treasures.

Schlachtersays she's noticed more and more neighbors posting about break-ins and theft onFacebook.

More than100 people attended the forum Wednesday to share their concerns with police andask questions.

"I hopeit shows other parts of Toledo that community services, block watch, whencitizens come together, things get done," said Toledo Police Deputy ChiefGeorge Kral.

Policesay the most important things people can do are be alert, know their neighbors, keep their homes well-lit, and trim shrubs around their house so windows and doorsare visible to others. They also say a new community service officer has beenassigned to the area and will help cut down on crime.

"We justwant a better way to keep our community safe so people come here and buildbusinesses and move here," Schlachter said.

Policesay they hope to make meetings like Wednesday's a more regular occurrence.
