City, county HR recommend eight finalists for Metro chief

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah and Chatham County's human resources departments have recommended eight finalists for Savannah-Chatham Metro police chief.

The departments have deemed 32 candidates qualified but recommended eight based on responses to a written questionnaire on what candidates would do to improve the police department and make the city safer.

Those recommendations were forwarded to the city manager and county manager. Under the Savannah-Chatham County police merger agreement, the final decision on who to hire is up to the city manager.

City leaders have described the chief selection as a joint venture between city and county, although county commission members have said they want final veto power on who becomes the next chief.

City spokesman Bret Bell said the candidates' names will be released once the field is narrowed to three or four official finalists.

"They'll come up with a short list, do background searches," he said. "And then they'll determine who they want to bring into town."

Interviews are expected in August. The city hopes to have a new chief in place by the end of September.
