The Little League Softball Junior West started with a win for Sunnyside and a loss for host Thornydale.
Sunnyside, led by the core of girls who won the World Series last year at the Majors level, spotted (Sparks) Nevada a run before rolling to a run-rule 12-1 win in six innings.
Angel Salas was dynamite in the circle as she limited Nevada to just one hit in four innings of work.
Thornydale stranded the tying run at 3rd in the top of the 7th in a see-saw game that saw them rally on numerous occasions against (Missoula) Montana before falling 9-8.
Thornydale will face Nevada Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in the double elimination tournament although teams are guaranteed three games as there is a Consolation bracket.
Sunnyside is idle until Saturday evening when they face the winner of Friday’s game between Montana and Northern California at 7:30.
In other openers on Thursday, Washington beat Southern California 3-0, while Alaska bombed Oregon 14-1.
