Statesboro Buzzes as Blue Devils Head to Dome

Tonight's all about high school football in Atlanta and in the Coastal Empire. Statesboro high players and fans are in the Georgia Dome. WTOC caught up with the team and its fans as playoff excitement covers the 'Boro. Its all about the Blue Devils Friday night in another state AAAA semifinal.

"It just doesn't get any better than that in a small south Georgia community, when you've got stands full of people, kids playing their hearts out on the field," said Statesboro High School alumnus Alan Tyson.

"I think anybody who every played ball at Statesboro High is never forgotten by the townspeople," added resident Jim Hayes.

"It's great to see all the signs around when you ride through town with the numbers for different players on the team," said running back Gavin McCullough.

Folks are still recovering from the team's miraculous comeback last week. "It brings the community together and it's just excitement from young men excelling at their sport," said fan Mike Curlin.

Since the team has played four of the last five years there, the Dome has become home away from home. "It's still a big thing," said offensive lineman Jimmy Gleissner. "We work hard every year just to go there. And it's just great to play where Michael Vick plays and all the NFL greats play there."

"I think the real fun is with the fans," said Statesboro High head coach Steve Pennington. "They're the ones who get a treat out of it, and it's just an experience."

Players say the only thing better than playing in the Dome is winning in the Dome and winning a state title on their field next week.

Kickoff is at 9pm tonight and our very own Chris Clark will have an update tonight on THE News at 11.
