Hometown Hero--Joe Cooper

Joe Cooper Joe Cooper

The Savannah Civic Center has been around for more than 30 years. And one of the people who has been there since the very beginning is Joe Cooper. He has been a fixture at the civic center since the day it opened in the early '70s. He is one of 20 full-time employees and more than 300 part-time employees who work whenever there is an event.

The arena can be set up to accommodate all kinds of events including basketball, ice hockey, figure skating and of course the circus. "We work day and night for the circus," said Cooper. "It's a big event. They have shows two or three times a day."

No matter what configuration is needed for an event, Cooper is the man knows how to put all the pieces together to transform the building for basketball, mud bogging, ice hockey or figure skating.

Cooper is also a cancer survivor. While he was out for several months getting treatment for his illness, his coworkers realized just how valuable he is. His knowledge of this building is unsurpassed by any other employee.

"I believe that Mr. Cooper is a major source of history about the civic center," said coworker Ray Bess.

Joe Cooper is 60 years old and plans the stay around for several more years. Whenever he does retire, his fellow employees say he will be a very difficult man to replace. That's why they believe he is a Hometown Hero.
