St. Joseph's Candler receives cancer research grant

On Friday, easier access to care was made for cancer patients across Georgia.

The National Cancer Institute selected the Lewis Cancer and Research Pavilion at St. Joseph's Candler as part of a new cancer research program that includes a five year, $5.85 million dollar grant.

Patients will no longer have to travel long distances to take part in an NCI sponsored trial.

"It's about putting patients on medical trials, the newest care for patients," said Dr. Howard Zaren. "It's about doing research in the community, so jut not putting patients on trial, but seeing how it can improve  Community Cancer's Care for a specific community we serve. It's about end of life care, it's about quality of life, and it's about every phase of cancer care developing that relationship with the NCI."
