Fire crews responded to a house explosion and fire at a home at 613 Leaning Oaks Drive on Wilmington Island on Friday, August 1st.

The call came in around 8:20 p.m. and the home was fully involved when firefighters reached the scene.Twenty-eight firefighters responded to battle the fire.

One occupant was in the home when it exploded. Neighbors said that the woman crawled to the garage and two of them ran in and dragged her over to the yard.

The woman was first transferred to Memorial University Medical Hospital and then transferred to an Augusta burn center around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

"Shortly after that the flames exploded through the roof," said neighbor Charlotte Stephens. "It was a horrendous thing to watch. Just horrible."

"I mean you can see all the stuff the windows and the glass from the garage door all exploded over here from the heat," one neighbor said.

Firefighters attacked the fire defensively at first to isolate the fire from other homes. Southside Fire was able to control the fire after 20 minutes.

"If you want to say a textbook fire stop, this is one that happened here tonight," said Southside Assistant Fire Chief Gary Jarriel.

50 percent of the structure did collapse because of the fire.

According to fire officials, the home is a total loss. Arson investigators are at the scene investigating and firefighters will remain at the home for several hours to monitor any hotspots.
