Families displaced after fire from lightning strike at Waterford Plantation Apartments

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Southside Fire Department is on the scene of an apartment fire at Waterford Plantation Apartment Complex in Savannah, the fire happened in the 500 building around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 3rd because of a lightning strike.

Firefighters were on the scene within four minutes after being dispatched to find smoke coming from the building with no active fire visible.

All of the occupants of the apartments were evacuated but the actual source of the fire remained elusive in spite of the investigative efforts used.

The fire traveled through the open spaces in the construction of the floors and up to the roof causing extensive damage. 

According to Southside Fire Department eight to twelve apartments have been destroyed displacing a number of families.

The fire is currently contained and firefighters are monitoring the area for any hot spots.

Red Cross is currently assisting the 18 adults and 3 children that were displaced. The families have been provided funds for shelter, food, prescription medication, and clothing.
