Albany teen making name on speed skating circuit

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - He shifts his weight back, then after a short pause, a quick movement propels him forward.

Just like that, 13 year old Sabien Tinson is off.

"My dad always tells me to lead from the front," he says about an important start. "I want to control the speed and control the race"

With that strategy, the Albany teen has found there aren't many in the country who can keep up.

Tinson just his his first two national championships, winning the USA Roller Sports freshman indoor and outdoor titles.

Now the focus is on getting better.

"It was a milestone and let him know he could compete with the best," says Sabien's father and trainer, Scott. "It just gives him the motivation to train. That's what keeps him coming out here day in and day out."

Sabien trains six to seven days a week with Scott.

"My dad's like my best friend," Sabien says. "We do everything together."

"It's brought us closer together as a family," Scott says. "In speed skating, all you have is your small circle."

The training has apparently paid off on the track as well, considering young Sabien has only competed for two and a half years. He only picked up the sport after being approached about joining a team at the skating rink.

"I tried out. I liked it. I went to my first meet and got third," he remembers. "One of the coaches came up to me and said I could be something in the sport if I really trained and dedicated myself to it. That's what I'm doing."

Tinson has become much more than just something. He is a superstar in the making in speed skating. And he has lofty goals.

"My ultimate goal is to win a gold medal in short track at the Olympic trials," he says. "Maybe in long track if I feel like doing it at that moment."

That would require a change from inline skating to ice. But Tinson has shown he's pretty good at picking things up on the fly.
