Kids head back to school today in several districts

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Students in the city of Atlanta and several other metro Atlanta school districts return to class Monday for the first day of the new school year.

Monday is also the first day of school in Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Henry, Lamar, Morgan and Paulding counties, as well as Griffin-Spalding County and the city of Decatur.

A new superintendent will lead Atlanta Public Schools this year. Dr. Meria Carstarphen takes over in a school system still reeling from the 2009 CRCT cheating scandal. Thirty-five educators, including former Superintendent Dr. Beverly Hall, were criminally charged.

In the 2014-2015 school year, APS teachers will get their first pay raise since 2009 with an average increase of 4 percent, according to a school district spokesman.

Atlanta Public Schools has hired new principals at 22 of its 107 schools. The new principals are as follows:

  • Timothy Guiney, Grady H.S.
  • Marcus Jackson, Carver H.S. of Health Sciences & Research
  • Josie Love, Carver H.S. of Technology

APS also has created an ombudsman's office to address student, parent and community issues. A district spokeswoman said the district ombudsman serves as an independent and confidential resource, providing assistance in resolving problems, complaints, conflicts and other school-related issues.

APS has added 13 new buses that operate on green diesel technology to its fleet. The 72-passenger, Bluebird buses are also air conditioned and will be added in all quadrants of the school zone, district officials said.
