Identity released of body found on Hilton Head Island

The Beaufort County Sheriff's is investigating a dead body found in Hilton Head Plantation.

According to coroner's assistant Janet Horton, the man has been identified as 55-year-old Robert Allison.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on July 30, deputies and members of Hilton Head Fire and Rescue responded to the home located at 1 Reflection Cove Court in Hilton Head Plantation at the request of Plantation security officers.

Neighbors had contacted security to perform a health and welfare check at the home as the homeowner had not been seen in several days and a foul odor was noted coming from the home.

While checking the exterior of the home, firefighters observed through a window a collapsed ceiling with water pouring through in the kitchen area.

Entry was made and the home was found to be flooded with standing water and extensive mold growth extending throughout the house.

The body of a white male was found on the floor of the garage in an advanced state of decomposition, suggesting that he had been there for more than a week.

Due to the environmentally hazardous conditions inside the home from mold and water, it was deemed to be unsafe to enter without appropriate protective equipment.

The home was secured by the sheriff's office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division responded for assistance in safely processing the scene.

At the time emergency personnel responded, the home appeared secure and no obvious signs of foul play were observed.

The death is still under investigation, and and the results of the autopsy have not yet been released.
