ALHAMBRA, CA (ALHAMBRA POLICE DEPARTMENT/CNN) – A giant tortoise is back with its owners after taking a slow stroll around California.

Officers spotted the 150-pound creature, named Clark, wandering the streets east of Los Angeles on Saturday.

The Alhambra Police Department wrote on its Facebook page that officers took the tortoise “into custody” after it had tried to “make a run for it.”

It took two officers to carry it into the local police station.

The tortoise was released after police issued a plea asking for the public’s help to find its owners.

Alhambra Police said it is illegal to possess a tortoise in Alhambra, but they made an exception because “we enjoy keeping families together.”
