Man apprehended after wrecking stolen vehicle

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Just after noon on Tuesday a Chatham County Sheriff's deputy identified a stolen vehicle in the Savannah Visitor Center's parking lot.

When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver, 21-year-old Marquis Maxwell refused to stop.

Maxwell led deputies to the 37th and Paulsen streets area before wrecking the vehicle. He then fled the scene on foot.

After a short foot pursuit by SCMPD and Chatham County Sheriff's deputies, Maxwell was apprehended.

Authorities found more than three ounces of marijuana and a firearm in the vehicle during a search. According to the Dept. of Corrections, Maxwell was released from prison on July 14, 2014.

Maxwell faces several charges, including obstruction, possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and theft by receiving stolen property.
