Sanitary sewer overflow in Shell Point, swim advisory issued

Over 5,000 gallons of sewage has spilled into the marsh near Dowlingwood Drive in the Shell Point area.

A leaking sewer line running across the marsh near Battery Creek caused the overflow. The leak was discovered on Monday, Aug. 4, and repaired by BJWSA staff that afternoon.

BJWSA is working with a specialized contractor to permanently upgrade and repair the sewerline.

The pipeline leaked for an undetermined amount of time.

BJWSA notified the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC), and is working in conjunction with SCDHEC to mitigate any effects caused by the SSO.

In response to the SSO, SCDHEC issued a "Swimming Advisory" for Battery Creek and connected tributaries from the Parris Island Bridge to Highway 21.

DHEC is collecting samples to determine if water bodies were affected.

Test results will be in Friday, Aug.8. Depending on test results, the Swimming Advisory may be lifted.
