Jesup community in shock after downtown fire

JESUP, GA (WTOC) -

A community is in shock after flames ripped through the historic downtown district of Jesup.

Several local businesses were destroyed and nearly 150 firefighters battled the flames through the night.

Investigators have been out at the scene, trying to figure out what started the fire, but as of now they have no idea what caused it.

People are speculating the cause was electrical, but firefighters could not confirm that. Investigators said they do believe the fire started at the Fair Haven Market, a nonprofit that supported the battered women's shelter.

A lot of people have been gathering at the scene on Tuesday just to see the damage. The building that was burned was over 100 years old, and many people said the downtown district may never be the same because history can't be replaced.

"We have a lot of history here, and this is the area that a lot of our businesses have been here since I was a child, and even before that was here, so my family has shopped here for generations," said Jesup resident Cindy Bacon.

The Fair Haven Thrift Store is now accepting donations at 256 S. Brunswick Street. They need clothes, household items and furniture.

The Downtown Development Authority is also collecting monetary donations. Checks can be made out to the DDA Fire Fund at any Suntrust Bank, or you can take the check to the Jesup Chamber of Commerce.
