Gov. Nikki Haley signs new alternative energy bill

COLUMBIA, SC (WTOC) -

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley signed a new bill into law on Wednesday that will encourage alternative energy production in South Carolina.

A ceremonial bill signing was held on Wednesday after noon at the Half Moon Outfitters in downtown Columbia.

Gov. Haley said she hopes the new bill will allow the Palmetto State to compete with other states in the region, which she believes have gotten a head start when it comes to solar energy.

"When you look at North Carolina and you look at Georgia, they've been doing well when it comes to solar energy," Haley said. "And they don't have any more sun than we do. So the goal is to always make sure, what are we doing? Never be satisfied, but what are we doing to move the ball forward."

The bill is called the SC Distributed Energy Resource Program Act, and it's a collaborative effort from power companies, investor owned utilities, solar power proponents and conservationists to open the door to more renewable energy production.
