Back to school time for several area school districts

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Another large group of students are heading back to school Thursday to start the new year.

We've already seen students in many districts in our area head back, and now it's time for students in the Savannah-Chatham County, Glynn County, Wayne County, and Evans County School Districts, as well as Bible Baptist School in Savannah, to kick off the new school year.

Bus drivers have already been rolling through Savannah on their bus routes to practice ahead of their first day of school. Drivers have been doing practice runs all this week, starting this past Monday with what was called a "wet run," where they go to each bus stop picking up the students at their designated bus time. It's good practice for the students and the bus drivers, especially since many schools are on new bus schedules this year.

Drivers started heading out in their buses around 5 a.m. Thursday. They've got about 300 buses that go to more than 50 schools.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and use extreme caution in school zones. Patrols will be stepped up in schools zones to ensure safety among pedestrians and drivers.
