FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (AP) - A young boy is recovering after being bitten by a shark off Folly Beach.
Media outlets in Charleston report that the 10-year-old was nipped several times by the shark while riding a boogie board in the surf on Wednesday. Folly Beach Fire Chief Steve Mims says the injuries weren't life-threatening, but the child did require stitches.
The boy, who was about 30 yards from the beach, was able to paddle to shore.
While there are sharks along the South Carolina coast, bites are relatively rare. There were only six reports of shark bites all of last year.
The state Department of Natural Resources says the last fatal shark attack along the coast was back in the 1850s.
