Widening project for I-95 and Pooler Parkway intersection begins

POOLER, GA (WTOC) -

Many people who travel along Pooler Parkway near the I-95 intersection know of the delays that can be experienced when sitting through several rounds of light changes in a highly congested area.

Now a project has officially started to relieve some of the traffic problems drivers experience when going to this area for work or recreation.

The plan is to add a second left turn lane off I-95 northbound, extend the eastbound turn lane on Pooler Parkway to I-95 northbound and extend the westbound turn lane on Airways Avenue to I-95 south.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has expressed it can not help with a full blown expansion project until after the mall is built on Pooler Parkway.

Gulfstream, Savannah Hilton Head International Airport, and Ben Carter, the developer of the outlet mall, have stepped up to provide the resources to make the project happen.

Drivers are encouraged to use Pooler Parkway to I-16 or Pooler Parkway to U.S. Highway 80 to commute to I-95 during the expansion project.

Some business owners are looking forward to having more drivers come their way because of the reroute. One of the business owners who sees opportunity for more sales is Linda Rowe, employee of Pie Society in Pooler.

Rowe, whose business is on Pooler Parkway says, "We're looking forward to it in different ways than other people, I'm sure. Hopefully, in the meantime, it'll bring business towards other ways as well, people doing other routes trying different ways to get home or work."

The project is scheduled to be completed by thanksgiving.
