ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A ringing doorbell may have saved the lives of a man and his wife in Gwinnett County.

The fire broke out at the home on the 1800 block of Calvin Drive in Duluth early Saturday morning. The couple was asleep in a bedroom on the first floor when they were awakened by the doorbell ringing just before 3 a.m. The man went to go answer the door when he saw smoke coming from upstairs. The smoke alarms started sounding shortly after.

Investigators believe the fire burned the wiring to the doorbell, causing it to ring.

The fire is believe to have started in the screened-in porch on the back of the house and spread to the attic. It caused significant damage to the home.

Both the man and his wife escaped without any injuries.

In all, five adults were displaced because of the fire. They did not request assistance from the Red Cross.

Investigators are looking in to the cause of the fire, but it appears to be accidental.
