Major rain event causes large sewer spill

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

 

City crews responded to a major sewer spill at the City of Savannah Lift Station 40 on Darque Road around 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

The spill was the result of a major rain event and a lift station force main failure at Travis Field Lift Station 40 - Darque Road - which caused a severe manhole overflow. The spill was estimated to be 14,850 gallons of mixed storm drainage water and sanitary sewer. The amount of the spill is classified as a major spill under the State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
 
The spill was corrected around 6 p.m Friday night. Crews placed spill notifications and water quality sampling was done. The city will further investigate the cause of the force main failure. All agencies were notified as required by State Guidelines.
