Flash Flood Safety Tips

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

As Savannah and surrounding areas experience multiple days of flooding it is important to keep in mind how to prevent injuries or damages caused by high waters.

Here are some tips to help you and your family stay safe:

  • Get out of areas subject to flooding including dips, low spots, pot holes, washes, and etc.
  • Try avoiding areas close to bodies of water.
  • When driving know the depth of water before crossing.
  • If your vehicle becomes stalled in water, leave the vehicle and seek higher ground. Rising water can engulf the vehicle and cause occupants to be swept away.
  • Be cautious at night when high levels of water may be hard to see.
  • If there is not a good route to take because of flooding then turn around and get to higher ground waiting for flood waters to subside.
  • As little as six inches of water can cause a car to stall out.
  • Two feet of rushing water can sweep away most vehicles including SUV's and pickups.
Always remember that even a small about of water can be extremely dangerous.

Don't hesitate to ask for help when needed and call 911 in case of emergency.
