Former Savannah-Chatham police chief to appear in court on new charges

A court hearing is scheduled for Monday for former Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Chief Willie Lovett.

Monday's arraignment hearing comes after a third superseding indictment that brought new charges against the former chief.

The new indictment adds a charge of providing false statements, stating he lied to FBI agents on May 1, 2014, when he said he did not take extortion payments from Randall Wayne Roach since becoming police chief.

The U.S. Attorney charges that Lovett did take payments and knew that he took payments when he spoke to agents in May.

Lovett also faces charges of commercial gambling, extortion and conspiracy to obstruct law enforcement.

Lovett's co-conspirators in the case have already taken plea agreements.

Court is expected to begin at 9 a.m.
