Child neglect investigation underway in Bluffton

BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

South Caroline Department of Social Services is investigating Bluffton parents after their child was left home alone Saturday evening.

According to a poilice report, a child was seen screaming and running from door to door on River Tree Circle just before 8 p.m. Saturday.

The neighbor who found the child told deputies he only had a shirt and diaper on and he also had thrown up all over himself and the front porch.

According to the report, his parents weren't home.

"I'm very surprised," neighbor Lydie Daughtery said.

Daughtery lives about five houses down and was home on Saturday when this incident happened.

"At least three police cars... they were there for two hours," she said.

She is a grandmother and said she could not ever imagine leaving her grandson home alone.

"No way. No, no, no...never. He's too young. He doesn't know what to do. What if there's a fire in the house. The baby can burn. Never leave your kids alone...that's my motto," she said.

According to the report, the parents were not charged but DSS did give an aunt temporary custody as DSS investigates the situation.
