Jobs hard to come by

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Looking for a job in Tucson can be a difficult and frustrating experience.

Arizona is the third most difficult state to find a full time job.

California tops the list followed by Nevada and then Arizona.

Part of the problem is that all three depended on construction jobs during the boom times.

When the home construction industry collapsed, jobs went too. It's estimated the unemployment rate in the Arizona construction industry rose to 47%.

Many of those workers are still hoping for a comeback or have moved on. Dustin Reichard is one of those.

"I owned three homes in Tucson before I was 30," he says. "I don't even have a vehicle now."

He's like dozens of people who came to One Stop Service Center on Ajo Way to find work or update their skills.

Feichard says he now works part time for minimum wage.

"I don't want to be on unemployment" he says. "I want to work and support my family."

But finding work is a challenge in Tucson these days.

"It's a slow process that we're going through right now in terms of growth," says Jim Mize, the One Stop Executive Director.

Mize helps people find work but there's not much to find right now and feels things will get better but can't say when.

"It will fix itself but we're just slow coming out of it," he says.

For Richard it can't come too soon.

"I'm not above anything, he says. "I'll rake yards, shovel whatever."
