Kroger collects donations, supplies for local teachers

The days of teachers digging into their own pockets for school supplies will be a little bit less of a burden this year thanks to Kroger.

Tuesday, the grocery giant set up the annual teachers' shop as part of its LP Pencil Box. Just over 2,500 boxes were dropped off at the supply site, each stuffed with school supplies for students.

"We all know that a lot of students go back to school without a lot of the necessary school supplies they need," said Melissa Eads with Kroger. "What happens is teachers dip into their own pockets. What's so great here about Pencil Box is it's a place where teachers can come several times in the school year and get supplies for free for their classroom."

Customers and Kroger employees across Tennessee donated nearly $65,000 for the supply program. A large portion of the donations were used for Davidson County Schools.
