SCMPD gets new police cars

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Dept. is replacing aging Ford Crown Victoria police cars with the first of 91 Chevrolet Caprices.

The department said the Crown Victorias, many with high mileage, were a primary concern of officers in every precinct. Each officer will receive specific training on the Chevy's before they are allowed to use them in service.

"There is new technology in these cars the manufacturer has implemented and developed with the crumple zones and enforced steel, A and B pillars," said SCMPD Training Director Gary Taylor. "These cars come with front and back passenger airbags, knee airbags, curtains, side airbags. It's a lot to do about the safety."

The department is also adding 10 Chevrolet Tahoes for officers who need the larger vehicles. Both modls are specifically designed for police work.
