5 shot, 2 dead in Bartow County shooting

Two people are dead and three others are recovering after a man went on a shooting spree across Cartersville in Bartow County Tuesday afternoon.

Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap said the gunman first shot three people outside a home at 15 Brent Circle. One of the men died. The other two were airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

"This is something we don't ever want to see," said Millsap. "You never expect things like this to show up in Bartow County, Georgia. But it is happening everywhere. Fortunately we're prepared for things like this."

And investigators needed to be because what happened next surprised them in this mostly quiet town: multiple shootings across three different locations.

After the triple shooting on Brent Circle, the gunman drove a couple of miles away to a corner home on Milam Bridge Road. Millsap said the man drove his truck into the home, got out and shot another man.

The shooter then got back in his truck, ditched it and carjacked another vehicle.

As police chased him along busy Highway 113 in the stolen vehicle, the gunman crashed into a lawn-care trailer full of equipment that exploded.

Police found the gunman dead in the car, where he'd shot himself in the head.

"It's a tragedy for everybody that's involved. It's even tragic for the perpetrator because he killed himself," said Millsap. "We just don't want to see anything like this on our streets."

The son of one of the survivors at the first house told CBS46 reporter Donna Rapado his father was at the Brent Circle home doing some construction for the homeowner.

The victim went into surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital overnight and is stable, but family said the damage was done. The bullet shattered his spine, paralyzing him. He is expected to have another surgery Wednesday.

The other two survivors' conditions are unknown.

Investigators were waiting for search warrants to enter the homes. They are looking for a motive for the shootings.
