A fixture in the Bessemer community has passed away.

Howard Johnson, who founded Johnson Memorial Funeral Home, died on Tuesday morning at the age of 87.

Johnson got into the funeral home business in 1944 working under black business pioneer A.G. Gaston at his Smith and Gaston funeral home.

The Army veteran opened his own funeral home in 1967 at 2531 Ninth Avenue North in Bessemer after purchasing the property from A.G. Gaston, before moving the business across the street to its current location at 2601 Ninth Avenue.

Johnson's son Howard G. Johnson has run the business for more than 10 years.

Johnson's funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, August 19 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Roosevelt 6012 Malcolm Avenue, Birmingham.
