Georgia's first lady speaks out on bus safety

COLQUITT CO., GA (WALB) - Fifteen Georgia children have been killed at school bus stops or on buses in the last five years.

Georgia's first lady wants to prevent deaths this school year. Sandra Deal is encouraging you to drive safely around school buses now that school is back in session.

She met with school officials and bus drivers in Colquitt County today to spread that message. "I just think safety is important because, you know, if you try to prevent something oftentimes it saves a child's life," says Sandra Deal, Georgia's First Lady

Deal also met with students from Colquitt County High School.

Her trip was part of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety's effort to make sure drivers obey all traffic laws around buses.
