Operation Thunder enforces school zone speeds

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Operation Thunder is continuing to crack down on traffic violations, especially since most schools are back in session.

This week, the Governor's Office of Highway Safety teamed up with Screven and Effingham counties by ticketing drivers who are not slowing down in school zones and not stopping when buses release their stop sign to pick up and drop off students.

"If you're blasting through there, you're endangering the lives of kids," Director Harris Blackwood said. "At this time of year children are not paying attention to the cars. They are excited about getting back to school to be with their friends. They're not looking for you. What we want people to do is look out for the children."

They want to remind drivers that most school zones have an average speed of about 25 miles per hour.
