Women's Equality Day observance at Ft. Stewart

FORT STEWART (WTOC) -

Fort Stewart and the 42nd Fires Brigade hosted a Women's Equality Day observance at Club Stewart on Wednesday.

The day commemorated the 1920 passage of the 19th amendment, which guaranteed women the right to vote.

Pembroke Mayor Mary Warnell served as the guest speaker at the event.

"I think it really gives us an opportunity to look back at our heritage and the role women have played throughout the years, significant roles, whether we had the right to vote, whether we had the right to hold public office, we continue to work on it. And it's an honor, I feel as a citizen in my community, in my city, that if I want to do things to help in my community, I needed to step up and offer my name for public office," she said.

Fort Stewart held its observance a little early this year, Aug. 26 is the official date designated by Congress.
