West Chatham traffic issues causing frustration

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Parents voicing frustration with ongoing traffic problems at West Chatham Elementary and Middle School, saying on some days the traffic is overflowing on to several main roads.

Parents are saying this is a big issue and something needs to be done.

While the schools have different bell schedules, it's close enough that parents say on most days traffic is overflowing on to Pine Barren in both directions, backing up toward Pooler Parkway and then sometimes even curving around South Roger Street.

Parents said the school administration has done everything possible to relieve these traffic pains over the years, but it's beyond their control.

"We sit there for so long. And they are frustrated. The fact that they have to leave so early to sit there to be able to get into the front of the line, and if you don't you're going to sit on the road or sit in the back of the parking lot or whatever for a long time," parent Tasha May said.

Some parents park in a nearby neighborhood just to avoid sitting in the line.

But here's the good news, the district said they are aware of the issue and looking for ways to fix it. They will be conducting a traffic study to address the ongoing congestion issues.

The district said they have assigned a certified engineer to conduct a traffic study in the area to look at existing and new ways to and from the schools. They'll first look at a temporary solution and then a long term one.

"The key element is we've just got to find a way to get those parents off pine barren. There may be another route that we may be able to bring them in for carriers on dismissal and arrival. And we feel that with an effective traffic study we'll be able to do that," Kurt Hetager with SCCPSS said.
