WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department have a man in custody accused of trying to run over two officers Thursday morning.

According to Lt. Fanta with the Wilmington Police Department Pierce Lee Gaddy was arrested and charged with assault on law enforcement.

WPD said a guest at the Marriott Hotel off Eastwood Road saw Gaddy trying to break into cars in the parking lot around 5 a.m.

When officers arrived, they spotted Gaddy in the parking lot checking door handles.

Police say when officers approached the man, he got in his car and sped out of the parking lot almost running over two of the officers.

One of the officers fired several shots at the vehicle, but the suspect got away and headed north on Eastwood Road. Police say it is unclear if Gaddy was hit.

Gaddy was placed in the New Hanover County Jail under a $35,000 secured bond.
