Elizabethtown man arrested for stealing a vehicle, crashing into a ditch

An Elizabethtown man was arrested for allegedly stealing a vehicle and crashing it into a ditch Tuesday night.

According to Elizabethtown officials, the victim left his vehicle running while he went inside his friend's home to visit for a few minutes. When he left the home, his vehicle was gone.

Elizabethtown Police responded and as the officer was filling out a report, police received a report of a vehicle that had crashed in a ditch on East Broad Street near Locks Road.

Officers responded to the wreck and discovered it was the vehicle reported stolen earlier, and the suspect was still strapped inside.

A witness at the scene reported that the suspect, Ralph Demmond McKinley, 37, passed him on a double yellow line going about 80 mph. According to the witness, the suspect ran off the road while passing him, overcorrected, and then crashed into the ditch.

Elizabethtown Fire Department responded and cut McKinley out of the car. He was taken to Bladen County Hospital for treatment. 

McKinley was charged with felony larceny of a motor vehicle, DWI, driving with a revoked license, and careless and reckless driving.
